The IRS lost my refund! What do I do?

If you're like most taxpayers, you're probably looking forward to receiving your refund after filing your taxes. However, there are times when the IRS may lose your refund, which can be frustrating and stressful. So what can you do if this happens to you?

First and foremost, it's important to stay calm and not panic. While it can be frustrating to not receive your refund, getting upset or angry won't solve the problem. Instead, take a deep breath and follow these steps:

  1. Check the status of your refund. The first thing you should do is check the status of your refund using the IRS's "Where's My Refund" tool. This tool will give you an estimated date for when your refund will be sent to you. If it's been longer than the estimated date, it's possible that your refund was lost.

  2. Contact the IRS. If you've checked the status of your refund and it's been longer than the estimated date, it's time to contact the IRS. You can do this by calling the IRS's toll-free number at 1-800-829-1040. However, as anyone who has tried to contact the IRS knows, you may immediately have the call cancelled or wait for hours on the public line. Be sure to have your social security number and tax return information on hand when you call. The IRS representative will be able to help you determine what happened to your refund and what steps you need to take next.

  3. File a claim for your lost refund. If the IRS determines that your refund was lost, you'll need to file a claim for it. A Tax Attorney at Safeguard Law, PLLC can file this for you and advocate on your behalf to get your money.

If you find yourself in a situation where the IRS has lost your refund, don't panic. By following these steps and staying in contact with the IRS, you'll be able to get your refund and move on with your life.
